We were appointed to carry out an interesting external project by EMCOR, the British Library's Hard FM Services Contractor, to redecorate the metal railings surrounding the St Pancras building. The railings had not been redecorated since the building was handed over to British Library (BL) and needed to be restored to their former pristine condition. In line with recommendations made by Leighs Paints and BL, the surfaces of the railings were prepared, with any corroded sections being dealt with by shot blasting. The recommendations included for ‘bringing forward' any bare surfaces and for redecorating the entire railings with a two-pack paint system in a semi-matt finish.
Prior to the start of the project a panel of railing was redecorated in line with the detailed specification for the works. The panel was subsequently approved by EMCOR and British Library and will continue to be used as a benchmark for the required standard of preparation and finish for all subsequent works on the project. It is anticipated that the remainder of the repainting works will be completed in phases over the next 12 months.
In line with our focus on being proactive and trying to exceed client expectations, we have recommended a 5 year proposal to maintain these high profile railings to a permanently high standard. The proposal includes an annual visit to pressure wash and make spot repairs. This basic maintenance is inexpensive and be very cost effective in the long term . In addition, the railings will look as new throughout the period and will enhance the client's image.
"The Academy team on site has kept in regular contact with both the British Library and Emcor, maintaining the standard throughout. Academy have subsequently been asked to undertake additional painting works."
